Do I Need Orthotics?

Orthotics are medical devices you wear inside your shoes to correct foot issues. Including: how you walk, stand or run. Orthotics can also help foot pain caused by medical conditions such as diabetes, plantar fasciitis and arthritis.

Our podiatry team assesses your foot issues through a 45-minute biomechanical appointment. Orthotics are not always necessary for correcting foot issues. Our team talks through your symptoms and a physical. If you're experiencing some of the following conditions, you may need orthotics:

Corns: an area of compacted hard skin.

Nerve loss in the feet: when the nerve endings in your feet just aren’t working as well as what they should. Orthotics cannot resolve this issue but can treat pain.

Ulcerations: is a prolonged break in the skin which take an extended period of time to heal. For some people, an ulcer WILL NOT heal unless the pressure is taken away, making orthotics the perfect solution for this issue.

Ingrown toenails: An ingrown nail occurs when the skin on one or both sides of a nail grows over the edges of the nail, or when the nail itself grows into the skin.

Bunions: a bony bump that forms on the joint as the base of your big toe. Bunions occur when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place.

Swelling: enlarged or purplish feet.

Problems with balance: falling, stumbling or feeling unsteady when walking, standing or running.

Flat feet: when the arch of the foot is lower than normal causing stress on the heel or arch area.

High arch: known as "cavus feet", this problem causes excess amounts of weight to be placed on the ball and heel of the foot.

Your shoes are wearing unevenly: one of your shoes is wearing down more quickly on one side than the other, it can be a sign that pressure on your feet is distributed unequally.

If any of the above symptoms persist without treatment, you may further damage your feet to the point where it could lead to a severe health issue. Custom orthotics can restore joint alignment so surrounding muscles and connective tissues can maintain their function.
